Mama Used to Say
It’s International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, time to celebrate everything this means!
Happy Friday friends.
Hey there, folks! It’s your friendly neighbourhood eco-enthusiast, back again with another dose of green wisdom. And guess what? It’s that time of the year again – International Women’s Day today, and Mother’s Day on Sunday!
Time today then to celebrate the wonderful achievements of women, what they contribute to our world and how they make this world possible. It’s a scientific and biological fact that man cannot live without women, and every reasonable man would freely admit that we can’t practically live without them either.
And on Sunday we will celebrate Mother’s Day, whether still with us or not, we can offer up thanks and gratitude for everything our mother is or was.
In recent times I’ve seen two dear friends Tim and Phippo say goodbye to both their lovely mums, and even though we accept that this is the normal order of life I am now acutely aware that I only have limited time with my own lovely but now very elderly mum.
So I relish, savour and appreciate every moment spent with her, even if it is just sitting watching the tv together with the volume making your ears bleed because her ears don’t work so well anymore.
But before you go scrambling for flowers and chocolates, let’s take a moment to reflect on another opportunity on this special day.
Sure, Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to shower our mums with love and appreciation for all that they do. But in the midst of the festivities, it’s crucial not to overlook another equally important mother – Mother Earth herself.
You see, just like our own mothers, Mother Earth nurtures and sustains us in countless ways. She provides us with the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. She cradles us in her vast ecosystems, offering shelter and resources for our survival. In essence, she is the ultimate mother figure, tirelessly caring for her children – us.
But here’s the kicker – we haven’t exactly been the most grateful offspring. Our collective actions have taken a toll on Mother Earth, from deforestation and pollution
to climate change and habitat destruction. It’s like we’ve been trashing our own mother’s house and expecting her to clean up after us!
So, this Mother’s Day, let’s make a commitment to show gratitude to our mothers and Mother Earth herself. And what better way to do that than by embracing sustainability.
Think about it – every eco-friendly choice we make is like giving Mother Earth a big bear hug. Whether it’s reducing our plastic consumption, opting for renewable energy, or supporting local farmers, each action sends a powerful message of gratitude and respect.
And hey, speaking of gifts, why not consider giving your mum something that’s not just thoughtful but also sustainable? Instead of traditional flowers wrapped in plastic or a generic greeting card, how about a potted plant that she can nurture and care for? Not only will it last longer, but it’ll also help purify the air and bring a touch of nature indoors.
Or how about treating her to a homemade meal using locally sourced, organic ingredients? Not only will it be delicious, but it’ll also support local farmers and reduce the carbon footprint of your meal.
Of course, the best gift of all is spending quality time with your mum if she’s still with you, whether it’s going for a hike in nature, enjoying a picnic in the park, or simply sharing stories and laughter over a cup of tea. After all, what better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than by immersing ourselves in the beauty and wonder of Mother Earth?

So, as we gear up to celebrate Mother’s Day this year, let’s remember to honour both our mums and Mother Earth herself. Let’s show our appreciation not just with flowers and chocolates, but with acts of kindness, gratitude, and sustainability. After all, there’s no better way to say “I love you” to both our mums and to the planet that sustains us all.
Thanks for reading, have a beautiful weekend.
Mike.
