Syntech Biofuel plans 200-job biofuel production facility at former Grangemouth Sawmills

Syntech Biofuel Limited has notified Falkirk Council of its intention to apply for planning permission to bring the former Grangemouth Sawmills at Earls Road, Grangemouth, back into productive industrial use as a biofuel production and storage facility, supporting 200 jobs.
A Proposal of Application Notice was submitted to the Council on 20 August 2026, formally beginning the statutory pre-application consultation process. The proposals involve the reuse and alteration of the existing industrial buildings and offices on the site, along with ancillary plant, structures, boundary treatment and associated infrastructure works.
Syntech produces Syntech ASB, a British-made B100 biofuel refined from UK waste cooking oils that replaces fossil diesel in existing equipment without new engines, fleets or refuelling infrastructure. JCB states it can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 93 per cent compared with standard diesel, and Speedy has approved it across its entire power-generation fleet. Syntech will also supply Balfour Beatty on the Lower Thames Crossing.
The Grangemouth site will be an integral part of Syntech’s expanding domestic production, turning a UK waste stream into lower-carbon fuel for domestic businesses. Alongside the 200 jobs, the company expects the facility to support apprenticeships, skills development and opportunities in the local supply chain.
Tom Bingham, CEO at Syntech Biofuel, said: “Grangemouth has generations of energy and industrial expertise, and we want to put a redundant site back to work with 200 jobs as part of Scotland’s industrial future. Our fuel is made in the UK from domestic waste, and it cuts carbon from the machinery businesses are already running today. We are at the very start of this process and we want to hear from the local community before we finalise our plans.”

Following an extensive programme of trials conducted over several months across both Stage III and Stage V generators, Speedy is pleased to approve Syntech ASB B100 biofuel for use across our entire power generation.
The trials demonstrated that Syntech ASB performs in line with conventional EN590 diesel, with no loss of performance, no operational issues and no impact on SCR or DPF functionality. The only equipment adaptation required was the straightforward replacement of standard cellulose fuel filters with B100-compatible alternatives.
Working collaboratively with Syntech, we have demonstrated that a UK-produced B100 biofuel can provide the construction industry with a practical and immediately deployable alternative to fossil diesel. Importantly, Syntech ASB will be available across Speedy’s entire power fleet with no rental price uplift , enabling customers to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, while at the same time benefiting from full fuel duty relief.
With UK-sourced waste feedstocks, UK production and a transparent, traceable supply chain, Syntech ASB provides customers with greater confidence over the origin, sustainability and security of their fuel.
This collaboration between Speedy and Syntech represents a significant step forward for the construction industry. It gives contractors and infrastructure clients access to a credible lower-carbon fuel solution across a nationwide power fleet, allowing meaningful emissions and carbon reductions to be achieved today using the equipment already operating on sites across the UK.

Syntech Biofuel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Glen Earrach Energy
We’re delighted to announce that Syntech Biofuel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Glen Earrach Energy to explore the use of sustainable, UK-produced B100 biodiesel on one of the UK’s most significant clean energy infrastructure projects.
The proposed Glen Earrach pumped storage hydro scheme has the potential to make a major contribution to the UK’s energy security and clean power ambitions. Through this collaboration, we’ll assess how Syntech Advanced Smart Biofuel (ASB) can help reduce construction-phase emissions in hard-to-electrify applications such as heavy plant, temporary power and logistics.
The partnership will also explore how sustainable biofuels can support cleaner infrastructure delivery while strengthening UK manufacturing, supply chains and energy resilience.
