Things Can Only Get Better!

Happy Friday Friends.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Mushrooms are starting to pop up, the nights are beginning to draw in, and the harvest moons have been spectacular over the last week.

Big, full and bright, they light the way for the farmers around us while they buzz around like industrious honeybees in the yellow of JCB and the green of John Deere tractors, pulling the crops in with the occasional September cloud showering rain in along the Thames Estuary and the winding river Medway.

I’m back in Kingsnorth after 10 days on Mallorca. I’m refreshed, restored. It’s been a busy, busy exciting year so far. So I chose somewhere beautiful and quiet, with little distraction, I’m easily distracted. I rested and I read, enjoyed the warm sun and swam in clear blue water.

And I only logged into 1 teams meeting that my FOMO wouldn’t let me miss. In a world where we work hard and bombard ourselves with constant overconsumption and fast content it’s important to switch off regularly re-charge, re-set, restore, re-generate and all the other ‘re’ words.

But now I’m back and the Autumn days here at Kingsnorth might have got a wee bit shorter in terms of daylight hours, but not in activity. The vibe is good, expansion continues and the last week has seen us attend events and meetings in the Midlands and the Nuclear Event day for Sizewell C down at Tru Plant in Suffolk.

On Wednesday we held the first ‘Decarbonising Kent Day’ here at Kingsnorth with visitors from Medway, Dover, Thanet and Kent County Councils. I loved it, it was a really enjoyable day where we took them on a site tour showing how we make and take care of our Made in Britain biofuel Syntech ASB, they met our lab team and shared a buffet lunch of locally sourced food. (Francombs on the Medway City Estate always does a good job!).

The focus of this first event was to look at what we can do now in terms of reducing the carbon we create ahead of Net Zero 2050. Too many Carbon Reduction Plans are created then sit in drawers awaiting technology breakthroughs and silver bullets. Goals without pathways. It’s super important we don’t wait until 1 minute to 2050 for a magical solution to present itself when there is so much we can do now.

Not just in terms of reducing Carbon by using sustainable alternative Syntech ASB but also the educational outreach to the younger generations from Primary School age up. Nurturing skills and knowledge sharing about new industries like renewables will not only bring awareness about future jobs they might want to do but also develop a culture and mindset amongst our future re-cyclers and circular economy champions

Our new friends came with a variety of job roles, Climate Change Officers, a Sustainable Business & Circular Economy Programme Manager and a Skills and Employment project manager. All good, interesting people who engaged openly about their roles, challenges and aspiration. I believe these conversations and interactions are so important and we took a lot away from it, the feedback has been good so I think they enjoyed it as well.

Too much of the Climate Change, Net Zero and Sustainability narrative is labelled just as a problem. The point many miss is that there is a huge  opportunity,  I look forward to more days like this showing how we can change the story.
