Why Does Everything Take So Long?

Happy Friday, friends.

Every now and again, a story lands in your inbox that makes you stop scrolling. Not because it involves a billion-pound investment. Not because a politician has promised something else by 2050. Not because someone has launched another “game-changing sustainability framework” with 47 pages, 12 diagrams and a photo of a wind turbine.

No.

It makes you stop because it’s simple. People getting stuck in. People doing. People proving that environmental action is not just for scientists, CEOs and people who own very expensive outdoor jackets.

This week, one story caught my eye.

Young people with learning disabilities are helping create a huge network of trees and wildlife habitats around London through the London Tree Ring project. The ambition is to create a connected green corridor around the capital,  kind of like an “M25 for nature” while also creating skills, confidence and opportunities for people who are too often left on the sidelines.

And I absolutely love this.

Because this is what sustainability should look like. Not a slogan. Not a badge. Not a corporate PowerPoint.

A group of people putting boots on the ground and saying: “Right, there’s a problem. Let’s fix it.” That’s the bit we sometimes forget. Nature recovery isn’t something that happens somewhere else. It happens where people live.

It happens in parks. It happens beside roads. It happens on construction sites. It happens in communities.

And perhaps most importantly, it happens when people feel connected to it.

The environmental movement has occasionally struggled with this. We’ve made sustainability sound like a technical exam that only experts can pass. Carbon calculations. Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3. Science-based targets. Net zero pathways.

All important stuff, very important stuff. But if we lose the human connection, we lose the biggest force for change we have.

People.

Because people protect what they value. They look after what they feel part of. They fight for what they believe belongs to them. That’s why stories like this matter.

The London project isn’t just planting trees. It’s creating skills, confidence and connection. It is showing that the transition to a greener future is also a social transition.

And that’s a message we need to hear loud and clear. The green economy can’t just be about replacing old technologies with new technologies.

It has to be about bringing people with us. Otherwise, we are just swapping one system for another while leaving people behind.

At Syntech, we see this every day.

When we talk about replacing fossil diesel with lower-carbon alternatives like Syntech ASB, the conversation is not just about fuel. Yes, the carbon reduction matters. Yes, emissions matter.Yes, technology matters.

But behind every litre of fuel is a person. A machine operator. A driver. A project manager. A maintenance team. A business trying to deliver something. A community depending on that activity.

The transition only works when it works for people.

That’s why I get frustrated when sustainability becomes a competition about who has the most impressive target. Targets are useful. Plans are useful. But delivery is where the magic happens.

A tree planted. A river restored. A zero diesel infrastructure project. A machine running on cleaner fuel. A young person learning a skill. A community taking ownership.

Of course I’m almost describing the Lower Thames Crossing Zero Diesel Project here who are already doing this, not without challenges, but with an overriding focus on doing delivering the UK’s first ever carbon neutral infrastructure project.

These are the moments where change becomes real.

There was another brilliant example recently with river restoration work showing how damaged ecosystems can recover when communities, organisations and nature work together. Projects like the River South Esk restoration in Scotland have focused on restoring habitats, improving resilience and helping both wildlife and communities.

The common thread? Nobody sat around waiting for perfection. They started. They adapted. They kept going.

And that might be the biggest lesson here.

We sometimes look at the scale of the climate challenge and think: “What difference can I make?”

Fair question. The answer? More than you think.

Because every big movement in history started with someone doing something that looked small.

One idea. One conversation. One decision. Then someone else joined. Then another. And suddenly you have momentum.

The future isn’t going to be saved by one invention, one company or one government policy. It will be saved by millions of ordinary actions adding up. And that’s quite exciting I reckon.

Because it means everyone has a role. The engineer. The farmer. The apprentice. The CEO. The volunteer. The OEM. The Plant Hire Co’s. The person planting a tree on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, even schoolchildren.

We don’t need more people standing on the sidelines explaining why change is difficult. We certainly don’t need the blockers.

We just need to go, why does everything take so long?

We need more people to think the same way.

So here’s my thought for the week:

Sustainability is not something that happens to us. It’s something we build.

And if young people can help build a green ring around one of the world’s biggest cities, then maybe, just maybe, we’re capable of more than we give ourselves credit for. And there’s no time like the present.

Now, where did I put my shovel?
